Heliconia & Gingers...
This page changes often with the speed that these plants grow the plants we offer come and go. Most of these are tropical plants that need warmth and humidity to do well. Many can be grown in tubs or large pots and moved to a more protected are when it gets cold. Some gingers that do not require tropical conditions will go dormant in the winter. These will be described in the plant descriptions.
Tahitian ginger Huge blooms of red bracts that can get the size of basketballs. The photo on our "About the Garden" page shows a bit of the scale. Very striking. Like a red ginger on steroids. The culture is the same as the red ginger, good light and protection from cold.
Red ginger One of the most favorite ginger plants. Like other gingers they are easy to grow in pots if kept from cold and given good light.
Pink ginger A tropical classic and a favorite cut flower of florists. A tropical plant, but can do well in pots if kept from cold and given good light.
Jungle King ginger Huge red blooms on a strong Alpinia ginger. Flowers are very firm and bright. A great long lasting cut flower Like all Alpinia's they need good light and warm conditions.
Jungle Queen ginger Another great Alpinia purpurata variety. Large light pink almost white at the top blooms on an easy growing ginger. Best for warm sunny locations. Great cut flower.
Giant shampoo ginger A large-flowered version of the classic and very aromatic ginger. The clear liquid within its cone-like flower can be used as a natural hair conditioner. This is a very spectacular plant when in bloom and displays its larger flowers more distinctly than the regular shampoo ginger. It is very easy to grow in containers and needs only filtered light to bloom. Can be grown outdoors in mild climates as it will go dormant in winter.
Kimi Pink ginger A tropical classic and a favorite cut flower of florists. A tropical plant, but can do well in pots if kept from cold and given good light. Same as the classic red and pink but with brilliant neon reddish pink blooms.
Raspberry ginger Beautiful full blooms. Very similar in shape and substance to the Kimi ginger but a deeper red instead of pink.
Beehive ginger A thick waxy bloom emerges from the ground on its own stem. Very popular with florists since the golden yellow bloom are long lasting after they are cut. Similar to the Shampoo in habit but a more robust plant.
Shell gingerA large vigorous growing ginger with blooms of white flowers with orange and red in the center. This ginger is somewhat cold tolerant and can be grown anywhere as long as it is kept from a hard freeze. Full sun is best for flowering.
Heliconia rostrata Medium size heliconia with striking pendant blooms of fire engine red and yellow up to 2 feet long. This heliconia is good for container growing since it won't get as tall as most and begins to flower at about 3 feet in height.
Heliconia Champneiana (Splash) Like most Heliconia, it is extremely versatile, growing comfortably in full to partial sunlight. This Heliconia has a large yellow flower with red spots that may reach 3 feet long.
Heliconia caribaea Another extremely versatile Heliconia, growing comfortably in full to partial sunlight. This Heliconia has a large red flower.
Heliconia colinsiana A large heliconia plant with beautiful long orange pendant (hanging) blooms. Very striking and a great cut flower. Likes sun and warmth. Fast and easy growing plant.
